A rack unit (U) is 44.45 mm (1.75 inches) in height. To size a cabinet correctly, list all equipment to be installed and add the U-height of each component, plus 20 to 30 percent headroom for growth and cable management.

Wall-mounted cabinets (wall-box units) are suitable when space is limited, the cabinet holds passive and low-power active equipment, and the installation does not require front and rear equipment access simultaneously.
Floor-standing cabinets are required when equipment weight exceeds the wall fixing load rating, cooling requirements demand a hot-aisle/cold-aisle layout, or the installation needs dual-sided access for maintenance.
Depth: 300 mm, 450 mm, 600 mm, or 800 mm?
Cabinet depth determines what active equipment can be installed. Passive-only installations (patch panels, faceplates, cable management) typically fit in 300 mm or 450 mm deep wall units.
