Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A are three generations of twisted-pair copper. They are interoperable, but they are not interchangeable at speed, the right choice depends on distance, throughput and how long the cabling must last.

For any new structured-cabling installation, Cat6 is the practical minimum and Cat6A is the future-proof choice, Cat6A is the only one of the three that guarantees 10 Gigabit Ethernet over the full 100m channel. Cat5e is a legacy standard: fine on an existing network, but rarely worth specifying new. Cat6 suits sub-55m runs on a budget; Cat6A suits long runs, dense Wi-Fi and any 15-year-plus building.

Cat5e: A Legacy Standard

Cat5e supports Gigabit Ethernet to 100m and served a generation of networks well. It is now being specified out of new projects: it has no 10G capability, no alien-crosstalk specification and limited PoE headroom for modern high-power devices. There is nothing wrong with a working Cat5e network, but for new horizontal cabling, the small cost saving over Cat6 rarely justifies locking a building to 1 Gbit/s for its whole life.

Cat6: The Sub-55m Workhorse

Cat6 (Class E) adds bandwidth to 250 MHz and supports 10GBase-T on runs up to 55m. For offices and buildings where every horizontal run is short and 1 Gbit/s to the desk is the immediate target, Cat6 is a cost-effective, capable specification. Its limitation is the 55m 10G ceiling, beyond that distance it cannot guarantee 10 Gbit/s.

Cat6A: The Future-Proof Specification

Cat6A (Class EA) is the only category here that carries 10 Gbit/s across the full 100m channel, because it is the only one that specifies alien crosstalk. It is the conservative choice for commercial buildings with a long design life, for long runs to Wi-Fi 6/6E access points, and for high-bandwidth AV and 4K IP CCTV. The trade-offs are a larger diameter (more containment) and a higher material cost.

They Interoperate, At the Lowest Common Speed

All three categories are physically and electrically backward compatible: a Cat6A patch cord works in a Cat6 panel, and so on. But a channel only performs to its weakest link, mixing a Cat5e patch lead into a Cat6A channel caps that channel at Cat5e performance. Keep the category consistent end-to-end to realise the rated speed.

Migrating from Cat5e

Most migrations are driven by 10G-to-the-desk requirements, denser Wi-Fi, or higher PoE loads that Cat5e cannot support. When re-cabling, specify Cat6 as a minimum and Cat6A wherever runs are long or the building's life is long.     It raises the ceiling, not the service. Category determines the maximum speed and distance the cabling can carry; actual throughput also depends on switches, NICs and the internet connection itself.
